Mark Patterson presented me with a few Sunflowers during our weekly radio piece on the 1st May, and we duly took them home and wee gracie planted one in the Polytunnel, just inside the front door. and around 6 weeks later it's now standing 4' high and is a fierce impressive looking fellow at the entrance way into the tunnel! She brings every friend in to see it, and cannae wait for it to flower.... Thanks Mark!
At the end of April we held a great workshop in Clooney Community Centre where we sowed pots of Giant Sunflowers, aswell as the kids getting some I planted a few pots up myself too...and planted these at Maybrook Adult Training Centre...and they came out wonderfully.
Now we won't break any record with them, but they are in the 10' region so the guys are delighted with them!!
Just like Groarty primary this week the kids from St pauls are joining in the challenge to grow the tallest sunflower in the City of Horti-Culture 2013
The yearly mission to grow giant sunflowers has begun in earnest in Groarty Primary School...Classes 1-4 are getting involved this year by sowing the sunflowers at school, and when ready taking them home to plant in their own garden, for this we use the Fibre Pots, these are handy as it means the kids can just dig a hole when they get them home and plant them, no trying to get the plants out of the pots intact or any messing, plus it carries well into the curriculum.
