The above images are just 5 that I selected when I googled ' Salthill Gardens Mountcharles', but I wanted to see what a garden this impressive looked like in the very early days of spring, long before the crowds decend, long before the Crocosmia and Shasta Daisys flower. I wanted to see the framework of the garden, how the garden is prepared and see the garden at a time of year not commonly viewed. So I was delighted when the owner Mrs Elizabeth Temple invited me down for a tour...Below your find a selection of pictures from the garden in early spring, a time when the garden shows some real jewels and when the garden just smells of freshness, new growth, fresh foliages and the hope of things to come....enjoy!

Salthill Gardens website is here, lots of great information there also

The stable block from the outside, now a lovely meeting room and function hall. The courtyard has been beautifully paved and pots full of seasonal plants decorate the space.

There are no team of gardeners in Salthill, no army of tractors and the likes, there is Elizabeth Temple....and a few helpers from time to time...the garden is a credit to Elizabeth and her skill and determination to create something special in the worst of Donegal soils, only a 100yards from the sea....amazing sight folks

Elizabeth is a real plants person, a lady so full of energy it was hard to keep up! (I actually interrupted Elizabeth from a days gardening, she was pruning when I pulled up). The passion for plants when Elizabeth talks is infectious, her tales of headign to Chelsea Flower Show, taking notes of plants and then coming on and researching them further to see if they would take to the heavy soil in the garden show the passion she has for Horticulture. Here Connie and Elizabeth are standing in a a new feature area in the garden, a lovely stonework design.

Every great garden needs a Sanctuary, and the potting shed is most definitely Elizabeths. The vast majority of the plants in Salthill are propogated by Elizabeth in this shed (you can tell she spends quality time in here as it has the most wonderful fireplace in it!), a box full of Dahlia tubers await a rainy day perhaps. The potting shed if packed full of labels, string, cutters, pots all set in order, all purposeful, all part of something special....

Salthill Gardens is open to the public, from May through to September (full details on their website here)

I would recommend that you visit this garden at the start of the year, the middle and again at the end of the season. The array of Cottage garden perennials, unusual shrubs, old fashioned roses (all the walls are covered in rambling roses in the summer!) and trees are a must to be seen.....and for only 5 euro you'd be a fool not to call in and be inspired....as I write this I'm already planning my next trip down.....

Picture
Was up Prehen House and the snowdrops in the Little Wood area around Prehen House were brilliant, a great show.

Now Alison and Colin has suggested they open the grounds up for interested people to have a good dander around....

I think it would be nice for people to come to the little woods with the snowdrops
between 11am & 2pm on Sunday 3rd March.  We will be selling tea, coffee & homemade
cake for people to enjoy while they stroll around outside.  All the money raised will be going
to the Foyle Hospice & Meningitis UK in memory of Michael Clarke. - Alison in Prehen House

So no set times, just turn up between 11 and 2pm on sunday and Colin and Alison will be on hand to give you a show around.....

Prehen House can be found on facebook here and their official website is here

Invasive Species Removal work at Downhill

2/21/2013

Picture
Invasive species, such as Rhododendron Ponticum have become a real nuisanse to woodland and estate owners over the past few years, their over dominance of native plants has led to startling reduction in native flora and associated wildlife in many estates and large gardens, very few better pieces are available on their sources, problems and effect than this link here, by Countrysideinfo. Our increased awareness of the role of biodiversity in the modern garden and landscape means that the time has come for these plants, and it was great to speak to and see first hand the work that Toby Edwards, Estate Manager of National Trust Downhill is putting into it...

The Victorian era brought fantastic horticultural techniques and stunning plant
species and variety to our islands. They also brought alot of plants that out of
their natural habitat and away from their natural predators have thrived a
little too well,  Rhododendron and Laural are just two of these. In-particular
the R.Ponticum species has escaped its original plantings and where it was used
for game cover it is taking over our native tree species. Underneath the Rhodies
is very dark, acidic and dry. Its a dead zone for native plants and insects and
there is no regeneration of young tree saplings. With no insects it means there
is no food source for the birds and small mammals.
For us at Downhill Demesne
and thousands of other sites across the UK and ROI the removal of the Rhodies is
very important. We have been gradually stripping them out, chipping or burning
the growth over their root stumps to kill them which reduces the need for
chemical treatment and then stacking the dead wood to create habitats for fungi,
inset lava and birds.
Again this would not have been possible without the
support of our volunteers and groups coming in for "Rhodie Bashing Days" as much
of the infestations are in areas only accessiblem by hand. (its also an excuse
to have a winter bonfire and roast some potatoes in the fire for lunch!) The
results are instantly visible the following summers with fresh growth of fox
gloves and plants from dormant seeds. It is not long before other plants, the
bluebells spread, celandine, primrose and eventually tree saplings. In some
places we help speed this up with some extra planting of trees.

Toby mentioned that a lot of the work on the Downhill site is carried out by volunteers, and I was interested in the role that these Volunteers pay in the upkeep and development of the Downhill site, and how someone can become a volunteer
As a charity, National Trust gratefully relies on the support that people give
us as volunteers, we could not do what we do without them. People come to use
for many reasons; a chance to do something difference, get out of the office,
gain experience, a social activity, retired and find themselves at a loose end
or as part of a back to work program. We support all out volunteers with
training and there are plenty of other benefits specifically here at Downhill
Demesne & Hezlett House like the gluts of apples, Raspberry and other
fruits!
Its not just outdoor hands on work. Volunteers help us deliver great
visitor experience, amazing events, tell their stories of and care for our
places. The sheer spread of what we cover means there is always something
different going on. If you are interested in volunteering or have a group that
would like to get involved please contact our North Coast volunteer
co-coordinator james.milliken@nationaltrust.org.uk or speak
to one of our teams at any National Trust places.

Bishops Gate Gardens Restoration at Downhill

2/20/2013

Picture
I was part of an enthusiastic group that turned up at Downhill on Sunday past for a 'Behind the scenes' tour of Downhill, which was beautifully complimented by an amazing display of Snowdrops in the Bishops Gate entranceway. Toby Edwards and John Herbert were our guides for the day....

as Toby says "these 'behind the scenes' style tours showcase the efforts of the staff and volunteers that often go un-noticed"

Whilst the glen woodlands/arboretum themselves were the created vision of the
Earl Bishop. What has become the formal gardens developed from the efforts of
the eccentric Jan Eccles who into her nineties created the bog garden and the
main features. into her old age and after her death the Gardens gradually became
overgrown. After a confirmed Fireblight infection in some of the plant stock in
the gardens this gave us the opportunity to turn a negative into a positive and
kick start the gardens restorations. Over the past 5 years Staff and volunteers
have been building plant stock propagated from original plants removed in 2007.
Lots of hard graft and plenty of mud involved when we got (literally) stuck into
the bog garden. As the years have progress we've been working outwards from the
bog garden to continue the restorations. We have a particular approach that
favors a more natural side. Embracing natives such as foxglove, honesty,
rose-bay willow herb and other plants that are great for insects which has
positive knock on effect up the food chain for birds and mammals.

Sowing and growing leeks

2/20/2013

Picture
this week on Mark Patterson show we chatted about sowing and growing Leeks, now is very much the time to get leeks sown. Leeks ate very much a long-season crop, sown now they will be ready from end september onwards (first as baby leeks) and left alone will continue to grow into big fellows - harvesting right through the winter until late March. Leek Musselburgh is a good all-round variety and available here, sow the seedling thinly in a traditional seed tray, or 3/5 together in cells

Picture
once there 4inches or so high, give the seedlings a wee trim, this will stiffen them up, and allow more airflow between the seedlings and allow more light in about them, reducing thre occuring of fungus on your new seedlings. You will also have to be giving them the 'greenhouse shuffle' ie moving them and turnign them regularly on the benc_h/windowsill. As light levels are low this is an important job to get even growth

Picture
When it comes to planting them, just seperate the small seedlings into small bunches of 3/5 if you want to produce tasty baby leeks or individually if you're looking to grow  big leeks. Don;t worry abotu the roots so much as you'll be trimming the longer too much as you'll be trimming the longer troots back at the time of planting.

Picture
when it comes to planting just make a hole with a big dipper (a rounded bit of wood) or with a trowel and drop the plants in, you'l see the roots have been trimmed. and don't fill the planting hole with soil, just fill the hole with water and then water will settle a small amount of soil over the roots of the little plants.

Picture
spacing and planting depth
Make sure the soil your growing your leeks in is well worked, a nice light soil, so mix in some multi-purpose compost amd add a basic fertiliser such as Fish, blood & Bone Meal. Too much goodness and your leeks will go yellow so avoid loads of manure and the likes.

the leeks are ready to eat when you want to eat them.

Chitting Seed potatoes

2/20/2013

Picture
Nows the time to be chitting seed potatoes, to do this simply buy some seed poattoes from your local garden centre, or wherever, and place them rounded side up in a tray or box in a bright, frost free location.

Chitting allows the seed potatoe to do some growing independant of the soil, 5-6 weeks worth in fact, growth it would never put on in the ground as the soil is too cold. By chitting you ensure bigger, better crops.

Junior Litter Pickers taking pride in their place

Picture
This past week saw us continue a wide ranging environmental project with Christopher Cooper and Clooney Community Centre, this part of the project focuses on Litter Picking around the clooney estate, and boy did the folks of the after-schools club love it! They tore about the place with great gusto, it was a contest amongst them to see who could fill their bag the quickest...so much so they were disgusted when we said we had to go back in...they wanted to keep going. Christopher and Clooney Centre have a great group of kids here, Christopher has inspired them and they have really bought into the project....more pics to come!! Thanks to Todds of Campsie for sponsoring the High Vis vests for the Junior Litter Pickers to wear
