What is the non gardeners garden group? - this is a group of folks who enjoy gardening but wouldn't consider themselves horticulturists or botanists or the likes. Folks who enjoy the outdoors, nature walking and talking. The idea came about from a another fellow, Peter Donegan down in Dublin has a group like this and the folks who turn up are walkers, photographers, families anyone and everyone...i loved the idea so I'm stealing it for here lol!
The plans is we do a tour/visit each month. All informal, no fee for the tour/group or whatever but individual gardens may ask members to make a donation to a charity of their choice....you probably get the drift. Anyways I've mentioned this on Facebook and got a great reaction so I think we may have the making of something here. I've spoken to owners/curators/gardeners who would love to have the group in for a nice informal tour and a walk around. The idea is that we're not going there to learn about the botanical latin of plants its to have a dander around look at the gardens, plants whatever and hear some of the stories behing these...' my uncle grew them apples from seeds', ' aunt margaret got a slip of this plant in india'...etc etc...
So as an ice-breaker for the group. I'm proposing we visit the grounds of the Foyle Hospice in Derry. We all know about the hospice itself but folks who've never visited the hospice may be unaware of the fabulous grounds they have down there. Great walks all over it, pools, waterfalls, courtyard gardens, woodlands, gazebos, japanes styling, italian styling, veg gardens and some amazing scenery.... its a wonderful place. Our tour for the visit will hopefully be ground curators Liam or Charlie.....
