Rushes are a common sight in Donegal, lawns which are acidic and suffer from some compaction are particularly prone to these. So early as possible in the year a simple pH test should be conducted and then followed up with an application of Lime. A common source of Lime for the gardener is Calcium Carbonate, available from any good garden centre. Lime is vital for a healthy lawn, not only does is help to create a beneficial pH (6.5 is ideal), but it also helps with soil structure. Everytime you cut and removal the clippings from your lawn you remove Calcium and soil will naturally acidify due to rainfall, so a small application of lime is beneficial to nearly every lawn in the county. A more suitable pH and a better soil structure means less moss too!

When you apply a large amount of Lime it can take 2 years before the true benefit can be appreciated, so this is another reason why its best to lime a little every year instead of a big volume every 5 years.
