Myself and Connie set off on our saturday morning exploring.....(after swimming of course) and we headed down to Foreglen...I have received an invite from Catherine from Be Safe Be Well to come down and visit when they were up at the Grow it Cook it event in Ballymagroarty.....so off me an connie went...also Catherine was hosting a 'Big Lunch'....so with the promise of food...I was suckered in lol...and i was lucky enough the first man I bumped into was big Ivan Black from CVNI. Ivan and the volunteers from CVNI had built the garden from scratch for the centre over the past 6 months....from scrap of waste ground the Foregen CommunityCentre has a fantastic garden space....
The garden itself is kinda two parts. There is this the 'Show Garden' part, this in itself is split into a few different themes, along the line of 'the past', 'waste not want not', 'go with the flow' and 'at one with nature'....
as mentioned above I had big Ivan as a tour guide then David joined me from Be Safe Be Well and gave me the tour of the second garden area....the Productive part. David told me that they use all the produce in the lunch club in the community centre and that they deliver produce to some local groups for them to use to make nutritious meals with..i'm loving that the produce isn't wasted that its all used. The kitchen garden is all raised beds allowing for ease of access and maintenance...
and they also have a super Polytunnel and a big greenhouse area too, ideal for bringing on hot house crops. I was told the polytunnel is used for produce whereas the grenhouse is used to produce all the seedling and baby plants for sale and use in the kitchen garden.
out the back of the community centre there was also extensive seating and flower pots, flower baskets and planted containers...now when they started to serve food this place was packed....Catherine mentioned a figure of 250 in for lunch on the saturday I was there.
I mentioned that there was a 'Big Lunch' going on....well whilst I was out and about taking pictures and chatting to David, Catherine and Ivan the inside was filling up rightly...and this is the queue I stood in for me and connies lunch....and it was worth every minute of the weight! Thanks for the invite Catherine and heres hoping your project keeps growing...(shocking pun to finish up on....)
