Walled City Market in April

Its the first saturday in the month...and that means Walled City Market Day!!!!

Today we have an amazing selection of plants from Springtown Activity and Horticulture group, here Claire Thompson is offering info and advice on these plants, Also supporting the stall we have Broughgammon Farm, Broighter Gold Rapeseed Oil, Groarty Primary School and Flowers for You and also starring some amazing City of Culture sunshine....heres a few pics below from the stall thats on now till 4pm!!

Many thanks to Todds of Campsie and City Hotel for their support in makign this stall happen, also thanks to Derry City Council and Councillor Brenda Stevenson in their continual support.

And after a busy day in the City of Culture this is what it all finished up like....empty boxes. empty cabinets and empty shelves....thanks to everyone who came and supported us today....

Saturday saw the first our first trip into the monthly Walled City market, and boy was it great fun!. Groarty primary School and Maybrook Adult Training Centre took part and were offering a selection of produce and products the groups had been making and growing. The weather was great and the crowds were good, and we nearly sold out of everything. Any group can join the stall (see here) and we'll be back in April with more community produce.

A wee bit of confusion at the start of the day meant we had no tables to display the community produce on...Eeeek!! But many thanks to Austins Departments Store and Tower Hotel NI who answered our please for help by lending us tables for the day. Thanks to folks who brought us old carrier bags down to use for selling the plants, thanks to the folks who brought us bags of change.....thanks to Brenda Stevenson, Tony Monaghan and Shona Campbell from Derry City Council, thanks to Todds of Campsie for helping with the transportation of everything (and stuart for the help with the signs). Thanks to Maybrook Adult Training Centre and Groarty Intergrated Primary for taking part, Thanks to Donal Doherty from WarehouseNo1 and Chef Brian McDermott for the encouragement on the day.....Remember next stand is first sat in April, lots more seasonal plants and things will be on offer....

Walled City Market & Foyle Community Garden Initiative

Following on from the succesful second place obtained in the Pride of Place awards, Derry City Council are offering support to the many community garden projects that operate in the city by offering the use of a stall at the monthly Walled City Market.

Social Enterprice community groups are invited to use this stall to sell fresh produce, planted containers, herbs, garden plants....any fresh produce they are producing in their community group/ community centre or school garden.

The stall will be co-ordinated by BBC Radio Foyles Gareth Austin, and groups who wish to join the market should contact Gareth on [email protected] or 07506242774 so that Gareth can co-ordinate space.

Use of the stall is Free to the community garden, and each garden will staff and sell their produce on the day, offering helpful advice on maintenance, growing on etc etc

Each month the stall will offer seasonal plants, produce and the like all grown in the award winning community garden network that exists in the City of Culture.

I personally am delighted with this proposal, many gardens produce surpluss of the best of organic produce and many gardens have facilities to grow and produce plants, by selling produce and plants they will be bale to raise much needed funds to develop their community gardens...

In advance of each market, I will try to post up details of what the gardens are offering for sale that month.....
