During school holidays this summer I always have a bit of spare time on my hands, and this year I've decided to build a pergola around the back of the house, my plans is to cover this with climbing roses. Varieties like this Penny Lane would be wonderful to have climbing up a pergola, penny lane has lovely fragrant flowers.
a variety I have grown before is Dublin Bay, this vigorous Red climbing rose has a light fragrance and is ideal for a pergola
the rambling Rose Albertine is a garden classic, fierce vigorous, so ideal for a pergola it has highly fragrant flowers which are just super
the pergola will wrap around the house and on the north side of it I fancy this Rose Iceberg, I've planted this before and its a great rose for a cold spot or for a north facing wall. Its nice and scented and grows well making it ideal for an archway or pergola
another vigorous climbing rose, suitable to the irish climate, is Pauls Scarlet. this climber produces lightly scented double red flowers in serious quantity through summer to autumn.
my first job is to build the pergola, once I have this part done I'll organise the roses, they'll only take a few days to get here so that's the easy part....and I'm still considering copying the Rose Arbour from Everglades hotel too!!
