Oakfield Park in Raphoe, County Donegal is a key part of the Donegal Garden Trail.
I'm a regular at these amazing gardens and I'm delighted to be facilitating these guided tours around the gardens. The cost for the tour is 20 Euro and we'll take in the walled garden, the cutting garden, the lower garden, the castle and woodland area. (see some of my pics from Oakfield Park in Raphoe here)
The walk will follow this plan: Meet up at Car Park 10am, then we'll take a tour of the upper gardens and walled garden including the cut flower garden, then refreshments provided at 11.30 by Oakfield Park in the lower garden, next we'll take a wee spin on the train to the castle, and walk up from there back to the car park. We'll be back at the car park for 1pm. Oakfield Park doesn't open to the public till 12, so we'll have the garden to ourselves for the part...think of yourself as a VIP guest :-)
Please use the form at the bottom of this page to reserve a space for you and your friends. Kids under 5 Free.
Our tour will start at the Public Car Park area at 10am, from there we'll head up past the Nymphaeum, past the Pet Cemetery, Heathers Point, past the Ice House via Aprils Tree then up over Gypsies Point Gate to the Summer House.
From the Summer House we'll head up through the Badgers Wood through the Oak Field collection of rare and unusual oak trees to the Cut Flower garden.
From the Cut Flower Garden we'll come back down via the Top Pond and Ram Pump around the front of the house into the Walled Garden, through the walled garden taking in the various zones and into the kitchen garden.
From the Kitchen Garden we'll come back through the walled garden, via the Herb Garden and then down through the parkland to the Secret Garden.
From the Secret Garden we'll take in the ancient sweet chestnut trees (c1699) down through the driveway to the lower garden.
In the Lower Garden we'll stop for tea and coffee in the Oakfield Tea Rooms.
From the Tea Rooms we'll head down to the Spiral Mound, then over to the Tree Circle of quaking Aspen then up through the Allee via the Slate Urn to the Castle.
From the Castle we'll then go down to the Fountain Lake, perhaps see the white swans, then up around the Lake to the Boat House, via the Boardwalk, perhaps see the Black Swans, then over via the Lime Avenue to spot some Wild orchids and dragonflys.
From the Lime Avenue we'll go up through the trees, over Franks Bridge and then we'll be back at the Train Station.
You'll then have a trip around the lower gardens on the Train.
Upon completion your tour of Oakfield Park will be complete.
Afterwards please make use of the park (which you'll now be pretty familiar with) and enjoy the rest of the afternoon in a perfect picnic spot!
I estimate our tour should take us about 3 hours, and hopefully you'll take about a hundred pictures :-). The path network around the park is excellent but please wear comfortable footwear.
