Japanese Maples hate cold drafts and scorching sun, okay the scorchign sun might not be much of a problem for many but the cold drafts are, so choose a nice sheltered site for your maple, a cold draft will firstly brown the edge of the leaves, leaving it tatty looking in the summer and secondly shorten the autumn foliage colour by blowing the leaves off in early autumn. So a nice sheltered site is best.

Maples aren't that fussy on soil, any good humus rich soil is ideal, yes they do like a bit of Iron in the soil so a top dressing of needles from the forest or some lime-free compost is to their advantage. I grow the Orange Dream and Atropurpuream in the back garden, in a long border and they get a mulch of well rotted chicken manure every autumn and thrive on it. Many folks grow Maples in pots so they can be moved around the garden depending on the season, maples are ideal for this.

Maples can happily be pruned too, whether its for shape or to remove over handing branchesMaples aren't as delicate as some would have you believe. I once worked for a Florist who had a series of them in his garden for him to use as foliage for wedding flower displays and these were routinely harvested from and grew fabulously, However irregular pruning is best if you wish for the trees to develop thei rnatural graceful habit.
