Waste food could be EWWR focus, says WRAP advisor
Love Food Hate Waste is set to make its mark in Northern Ireland with the employment of new local partnerships advisor at the local office of Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), Danielle McCormick.
The former Antrim Council recycling officer is currently working on European Week for Waste Reduction 2013 as well as promoting the aims of Rethink Waste’s ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ brand.
WRAP’s ground-breaking ‘The Food We Waste’ report in 2007 contained shocking figures, including the seven million tonnes of food wasted from UK households each year, or £50 per month of food wasted by the average family.
The results of this report helped to shape the Love Food Hate Waste (LFHW) campaign, which set about trying to reduce the amount wasted by helping make changes to how consumers are buying, cooking and storing food.
The campaign, which is being championed in Northern Ireland by award winning celebrity Chef, Danny Millar of Balloo House, and local horticulturalist and Radio Foyle host, Gareth Austin, has focussed its attention through the delivery of a number of targeted initiatives including this year’s European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) held from 16 – 24 November.
Danielle McCormick said: “The LFHW campaign is the key focus of this years’ EWWR in Northern Ireland and we are really encouraging everyone to get involved in making a difference by pledging actions during the week.
“Actions can be as simple as downloading the LFHW app and making one of the leftovers recipes, to displaying LFHW posters within staff or public view. Or if you want to go large scale, why not run your own LFHW week?
“There are lots of great reasons for your business to get involved including potential cost savings, demonstrating CSR or feeding into your environment policy, but there is also the knowledge that you are contributing to the regions’ programme of actions which last year came an impressive 4th place in Europe, with a total of 543 actions.
“This year we aim to make EWWR even bigger and better and are calling on everyone to come on-board in making this year a real success!”
