Magnolias are super cool and just starting to think about coming into flower around these parts.The thing I like about them is firstly that they flower before any leaves come on them, like the forsythia, I think this is a pretty cool thing, and by having no leaves the flowers stand out even more. The best Magnolias, or should I re-phrase this, the Magnolias which capture out attention are the biggies, the ones 15ft+ in size...just spectacular. So in truth any Magnolia you plant today won't be in its prime for many many years, so its very much a forward thinking plant. Here are a few interesting varieties to choose from

Magnolia Grandiflora

Magnolias are simple enough trees to grow. Plant them in a sheltered site (too windy and the flowers will be destroyed by wind) and give them a mulch with some Ericaceous compost every autumn, and feed them occasionally with Rosefood, suprisingly low maintenance for an amazing plant like this!
