One of the many plants which caught my eye in Glenveagh Castle Gardens this week was the Astelia Silver Spear. Now this isn't commonly seen in Donegal, as it can be prone to damage from the cold during winter months, and in very wet gardens it can rot away in winter. So it shows you the temperate climate which exists in the pleasure gardens at Glenveagh.
Astelia is a really god architectural plant, its dramatic shape and colour makes it a good feature plant for a garden, and it works even better when planted beside darker leaves shrubs or grasses.
It's evergreen, and if you can provide a sunny, well drained spot its really easy to grow.
