Early on Saturday morning myself, connie and Gerry went for a wee mushroom walk through an old woodland nearby. Autumn is long associated with mushrooms and the sheer beauty of them is something that has eternally fascinated me..the woodland we visited has a mix of conifer wood and broadleaved woodland and lots of old branches and leaves lying around....so we were sure of finding loads....
After an hour and a half this was our selection we found. A wide choice of shapes, colours and sizes. We picked a small sample of each so that we could then research each one....deciding on which ones would kill us the most and the quickest....for helpful advice we turned to the Feast of Famine Chef Emmet McCourt who helpfully put us on the right path. But for me this wasn't about finding the edibles and the non-edibles it was about exploring the beauty of Mushrooms and boy is there some crackers out there!!
Now you know and I know there are many types of Mushrooms and Fungii that will kill you, some instantly, some after 6-8 days, so don't go gathering mushrooms to cook every one. If you want to do some foraging for food and learn more about it then conside joining a few groups/events like our upcoming one, or buy loads of books, study the mushrooms on-line, get professional advice and then double, triple and double check again....if it doubt...chuck it out!!!
